Safe performance

The very best way to survive a collision is to avoid one in the first place–that’s why Subaru equips drivers with the tools needed to steer clear of danger. The combination of a world-class all-wheel drive system, striking agility, superior visibility and class-leading active safety systems such as VDC and ABS combine to give every Subaru vehicle excellent evasive capabilities.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)

The Subaru VDC^† system utilizes advanced sensors to monitor and analyze if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course. When the limits of stability are approached, the system automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution*, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help keep the vehicle on-course.
† VDC is also known as stability control.

Braking systems

The ABS on the Subaru Forester incorporates the latest thinking on anti-skid prevention, as well as other features designed with added safety in mind. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure under different vehicle loads and Brake Assist automatically provides added stopping power in panic-braking situations.

Engineered to protect

In the event that an accident is unavoidable, Subaru provides a wide range of passive safety systems designed to deliver class-leading levels of protection. The exceptionally rigid construction of each vehicle and the incorporation of advanced technology combine to protect the driver and passengers with the added peace of mind needed when faced with the unexpected.

Advanced ring-shaped reinforcement frame

This design strengthens the passenger compartment by linking the roof to the side pillars and the floor. As a result, impact energy coming from all directions is dissipated and diverted away from the occupants. A front crumple zone brings further protection, while the engine is also designed to slide under the passenger compartment in a frontal impact.

Airbags

The Subaru Forester features dual-stage deployment front airbags, seat-mounted front-side airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard occupants. This represents one of the first stages of defense in a collision and an integral part of the Subaru offering.

Ratings of “Good” are the highest rating awarded for 40-mph frontal offset, 31-mph side-impact and 20-mph rear-impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) (www.iihs.org). A “Good” rating in new roof strength testing and the availability of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) (Vehicle Dynamics Control) achieves a 2012 Top Safety Pick.
